Nordic Ceremony Customs

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the edgier traditions. We asked bridal organizer Mariella Gink to provide us the lowdown on some of Sweden’s unique norms.

Before marriages in Viking times, the bride would get a bath to cleanse herself and symbolically wash aside her innocence. Then she would bounce into cold liquid to symbolize the shift into woman. Her hair was also a big deal. She did weave it into complicated locks to depict her gender, and the more difficult her braids were, the better it boded for the few. The brides may use a blouse and shorts made of wool or linen. They would likewise take their daggers.

In Norse society, it was common for people to give each of their friends home with presents. This is a convention that carries on today. It is common to see a gift register at Swedish weddings, but it’s not the standard to obtain big economic efforts, as most people can afford to buy themselves a manifest.

After the ceremony, it’s time to observe! Swedish marriages are known for their lengthy, elaborate dining events. The midnight may include from eight to 12 speeches, screenings of video swedish mail order bride from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
